Nashville Public Radio’s Spring Sprint Fund Drive was a rousing success, exceeding our goal of $50,000 in Membership at WNXP and our sister station WPLN. We are overwhelmingly thankful for the 91.ONE listeners and music discovery aficionados who came forward to express their support for our mission and so the week’s #ThematicStatic included songs all about thanks!
Feel the gratitude by streaming the show (👇🏼) and make future requests on Instagram or Twitter @WNXPNashville!
#ThematicStatic Playlist – 5/11/23
Sly & The Family Stone – “Thank You (Falletinme Be Mice Elf Agin)” – Ray in Membership at Nashville Public Radio guested with me multiple mornings during the Spring Drive and this was his first thought when I pitched the idea of “thank you” songs.
Neko Case & Her Boyfriends – “Thanks A Lot” – Back when Neko was dubbed “alt-country” (at least on the shelves of my college radio CD library) she did all sorts of twangy shit like this. It still hits.
Devon Gilfillian – “Thank Me Later (Again)” – Our April 2023 Nashville Artist of the Month, with a new record out called Love You Anyway, released a record in 2019 called Black Hole Rainbow and this is my favorite track on it.
Beastie Boys – “Gratitude” – Rex asked for this one, and I want to throw gratitude to Rex for consistently making great requests for #ThematicStatic via Instagram!
Big Star – “Thank You Friends” – We love our Middle Tennessee friends and supporters, obviously, who can hear us over the FM airwaves. But shoutout to Listener Members from other areas in the state, like Memphis, which birthed Big Star and the whole world was better for it.
The Flaming Lips – “Thank You” – Stephanie asked for the Led Zeppelin cover by Tori Amos (dope!), but since The Flaming Lips were playing the Ryman the day this first aired, May 11, I thought this was a fitting substitute. Find this one on the Rhino remasters of early Lips work.
Andrew Gold – “Thank You For Being a Friend” – Marissa took us down a Golden (Girls) road with this one, a very recognizable TV theme song that reminds us how fortunate we are to have built a community at WNXP that includes music fans and music-makers and music elevators (that’s us!) all in harmony.
Dido – “Thank You” – For my nineties girlies and everyone else, really.
William DeVaughn – “Be Thankful for What You’ve Got” – Jordan asked for this great soul song on Instagram. Here’s a longer version:
Alanis Morrissette – “Thank U” – Nobody asked for this. I wanted to play it. Ah, the glorious freedom of choice that is public radio! And this glorious final chorus:
Thank you India
“Thank U”
Thank you providence
Thank you disillusionment
Thank you nothingness
Thank you clarity
Thank you, thank you silence
Reigning Sound – “I’m So Thankful” – Another Memphis band, what do you know?! Andy requested this and I’m so thankful he did so that we can play it again sometime on WNXP.
Wayne Newton – “Danke Shoen” – Jon, you win, because we do want to express thanks in many languages but I hadn’t even considered this old classic!
Geggy Tah – “Whoever You Are” – Tony Gonzalez, in a call that came from “inside the house” (at Nashville Public Radio), requested this one that we actually used in a previous #ThematicStatic about transportation. I love that one-hit wonders can actually hit TWICE on nerdy themed sets like those we compose together for WNXP.
My Morning Jacket – “Thank You Too” – A real-time addition to close out the show, this song was requested on Twitter by a listener who said this about the first set (Neko Case’s cover tune):
Thank you for playing “Thanks A Lot” earlier. My grandpa used to sing that

at every family get together as Ernest Tubb was his hero. Thinking of him today.
That right there, memories revived and new memories made over music, is why we do this. And YOU make it possible, too. Thank you, all of you, for being part of this with us. You can become a new Member of WNXP anytime right here.
