Indie supergroup Bonny Light Horseman recently announced Rolling Golden Holy, the follow up to their self-titled debut, will drop Oct. 7 via 37d03d Records. The album finds the trio, consisting of Anaïs Mitchell, Eric D. Johnson and Josh Kaufman, building on the traditional folk standards of their debut and exploring new sonic territories while staying true to the old-timey roots of their music. Johnson takes the lead on the first single “California,” a tender folksy tune featuring twangy guitar, impeccable harmonies and the sweetness of Johnson’s vocal tones.
He says of the track, “Our first record was largely centered on the old world, whether it was some sort of mythical sweeping landscape on some British Isle, or maybe the old cities of the American East. This is probably our first West Coast song. It’s a sad one, a story about pulling up roots, new beginnings, goodbyes, early morning long drives, riding into the sunrise instead of the sunset. They usually don’t end movies riding into the sunrise but this movie has that scene.”
Watch Bonny Light Horseman perform their new single plus “Jane Jane” and the title track from Bonny Light Horseman live at WNXP’s Sonic Cathedral.
