It sounds like the set up for a joke — James Taylor, Neil Young and the “guy from Radiohead” are sitting around a campfire and who walks up? “This guy,” says Kyle Gass, most famous as Jack Black’s partner in the beloved, comedic music duo Tenacious D. But this time, Gass isn’t joking. He really did end up in that situation, at Neil Young’s house no less, feeling like the odd member of a Hall of Fame hang. That wasn’t an isolated incident. Gass admits he can feel like an imposter but his fictional rock star character in Tenacious D has helped provide him with a lifetime of real rock star dream scenarios, including a new collaboration with legendary six string shredder Steve Lukather (Toto, Boz Scaggs, Michael Jackson).
Gass says it was another star-studded situation that put the two together. They hit it off at a Harry Shearer (Spinal Tap, The Simpsons) event. Turns out, Lukather was a big Tenacious D fan and the two stayed in touch with no real plan to make music. A while later when Gass was considering covering the Bread classic “Guitar Man” and he thought, “What if I got Steve to be the guitar man?”
“And he generously said yes. I don’t think he even knows it’s coming out. I’m afraid he’s going to give me a cease and desist,” Gass deadpans.
It hasn’t been taken down yet! You can check the song out below and see Gass and his full band perform at The Basement on Friday, April 3.
