This Saturday August 30 is also Play Music on the Porch Day. The idea behind the international event is what if everybody took one day and stopped and we all just listened to music. One of the places participating in the day is Prospect House Music, located in the historic Edgefield area. Sunny McClure, facilitator of Prospect Music hopes to provide a creative space where musicians from all over can come together.
“When I decided to rent a house, it was during the pandemic and I was in an apartment,” she said. “I figured if I was going to rent one, I wanted one that was big enough for my friends from other states who were in music and could come experience Nashville and not have to pay for the hotels, because it can be expensive. I ended up renting a house that was way bigger than I need for my dog and me. I spent the winter of 2020-21 with an Allen wrench in my hand furnishing the place. But in the end, I couldn’t figure out what to do with the front room of the house. It dawned on that if I’m having musicians come and they want to experience Nashville and get to know people, I should have a place for them to be able to rehearse, perform, and co-write. That’s what I made the living room into. That space is entirely reserved for music, and it’s a listening room. It’s available for people to use, particularly if someone wants to do a house concert but they don’t have a house, they don’t a place big enough, or they want to do a co-write on neutral ground, however they want do it. Prospect House Music is just about music.”

“The last Saturday in August has been far too hot for anyone to sit out here on the porch. We don’t make people sit on the porch when the heat index is over 100. We use the main room and we run the amps out the door onto the porch so people can hear going by and I’ll put up signs and anybody can stop in. We have refreshments and people just sitting around playing music, and it can be anyone. If you’re a kid taking piano lessons and you want to come in and do something on the keyboard or practice in front of people, you can do that. Somebody who wants to try a new material can come in and give it a shot. We can jam, It’s anything. It runs from 12-4 p.m. here on Saturday.”
