New Music Experience: March 10, 2023

SONG OF THE WEEK

Mandy, Indiana “Pinking Shears” – A UK band named after a US state, singing in French with an internationally understood theme – “Je fatigue'” (“I”m tired”) – set against an appropriately cacophonous noise pop background.

bar italia “Nurse!” – A UK trio made up of musicians who have all collaborated with hip hop artist Dean Blunt. NPR Music says bar italia have taken a page from Blunt’s “gloomy, irreverent and shapeshifting artistic playbook” and combined it with “Blonde Redhead’s more blissed-out moments.” They just signed to Matador and this is their debut for the label.

Indigo De Souza “Smog” – This is the second single from All of This Will End, coming in late April on Saddle Creek. Indigo, who played a great live session for us last year says this was written “during the peak of the pandemic” when she was living “alone on a dead-end street surrounded by neighbors who were seemingly always mowing their lawns.” She says that “‘Smog’ is mostly about that strange time and how it felt in my house, alone. When the neighborhood was asleep, and all the lawn mowers stopped, I felt free to make anything and sing anything I wanted. It was my first time ever living alone. It brought me a lot closer to myself.”

Binki “Hotel Window” – The first new music we’ve heard from Binki since his 2021 debut EP, Motor Function, which featured WNXP favorite “Clay Pigeon.” According to NME this is set to be on Binki’s second EP for the FADER Label with an expected release this spring. Binki says “Essentially, the song is me venting about my social anxiety. I think it can feel like a prison a lot of the time. You can see how it’s affecting you and the people around you but that doesn’t fix anything.”

JGrrey feat. Kojey Radical “May” – Longtime friends, first time collaborators JGrrey and Kojey Radical pair up for this tribute to JGrrey’s best friend who lost his battle with depression.

Sam Austins “Keep You Company” – The artist who crafted current WNXP favorite “Matador” returns with a track which The Line Of Best Fit describes as “forlorn decadence” and is expected to be on a new EP this Spring.

Billie Marten “I Can’t Get My Head Around You” – The UK artist who first came to attention as a 12 year old in the early days of YouTube, is following up her acclaimed 2021 release Flora Fauna Drop Cherries LP coming on Fiction Records in early April sabella Sophie Tweddle (born 27 May 1999), who performs under the stage name Billie Marten, is a British singer-songwriter and musician from Ripon in North Yorkshire. She first came to prominence at the age of twelve when a video on YouTube of her singing attracted thousands of views.[citation needed] She released her first EP at the age of fifteen in 2014
