As an actress, Lola Kirke has played many characters, but her latest role as an Americana star on the rise may suit her best. Kirke’s sophomore album Lady for Sale feels nostalgic, yet unexpected. Clearly influenced by ’80s and ’90s female country stars (think Pam Tillis and Reba McEntire), Kirke has created not only a sound that feels familiar but a persona to match. Her country-tinged vocals mixed with twangy guitars and pedal steel fit the genre in an obvious way, but the humor laced throughout the album sets Kirke apart from many of her peers.
