Effortless seems to be the best way to describe Arlo Parks’ artistry. The British singer-songwriter had a huge breakout year after the release of her 2021 debut Collapsed In Sunbeams, which is nominated for Best Alternative Music Album at the 2022 Grammy Awards, where Parks is also up for Best New Artist.
The timing of Parks’ success feels appropriate. While the rest of the world struggles with uncertainty and fear, Parks delivers hopeful lyricism packaged perfectly with trip hop, neo-soul and acoustic guitars, exploring topics like mental health and sexuality. Take the song “Hurt,” for example, with its soothing instrumentation and songwriting. “I know you can’t let go of anything at the moment. Just know it would hurt so, won’t hurt so much forever,” Parks sings over mellowed beats.
