Andy Shauf didn’t set out to make another concept record when writing his latest full-length Norm— in fact, quite the opposite. But after writing the voyeuristic song “Telephone,” the character Norm emerged. Since his 2009 debut, Shauf has solidified himself not only as an exceptional storyteller, but a composer as well. His complex musical arrangements (complete with synths, clarinet, flute and trombone) set the scenes for his characters and transport the listener to the landscapes Shauf so brilliantly creates. Norm is no exception. Although slightly darker than his previous work, the 12-song collection is quintessential Andy Shauf.
