John Dyke grew up on his family’s East Tennessee farm, where they raised their own food. After moving to Nashville and missing the farm-fresh food of his childhood, he launched the first Turnip Truck in East Nashville in 2001 becoming Nashville’s locally owned full-service natural grocer.
Now expanded in four locations, Turnip Truck will celebrate 25 years with a block party happening at their East Nashville location this Saturday featuring product samples from local vendors, interactive kids’ activities, special menu of food and beverages, live music performances and discounts on premium products.
“I started coming to Turnip Truck as a child,” coordinator of marketing for Turnip Truck Jaryn Rowland said. “We’re all-natural local grocer, full service, that means we do juices, smoothies, we do deli sandwiches. We have house-made sushi that we make every day. Guacamole, a hot/salad bar, full grocery department, meat, seafood, health and wellness, supplements, body care. We do not carry any artificial ingredients in our food and we’re locally born. We just keep things in the community and keeping that sense of community strong within Nashville. We’ve been through several things from the tornado that came through the ice storm that just happened. We just want to be a hub for the community and we want to celebrate. 25 years is a huge milestone for a local establishment.”
