What Where When-sday: Mirror Mirror Network

Mirror Mirror Network, located on 2623 Lebanon Pike, will be closing their doors on their space after four years with a final show this Monday (Aug 24) featuring performances from DJ Afrosheen and The Serpenteens. Marco Argiro, co-owner of the space and member of The Serpenteens says they wanted to provide a safe place for people to gather and celebrate love, art, music.

When we initially signed on and got the lease, we opened as a retail store that did pop-up shows,” he said. “We’re always about music and live entertainment, so we always wanted to incorporate that, but in that small afterthought pop-up sense. As we went along, things grew and we built a proper stage on one side of the building and started throwing even bigger shows.”

He continued: “It’s been an honor and a privilege to be able to give a platform to a variety of different styles of artists, everything from visual artists to burlesque performers to drag performers to the rock and rollers out there. We’ve done jazz, indie, R&B and hip-hop. We are friends with a lot of great artists and we wanted to give people a stage and an opportunity to share their voice.”

Marco and Tracy Argiro, co-owner of Mirror Mirror Network and drummer for The Serpenteens, asked Lovers Lane Costume Closet to construct a big heart display for the space. Tracy painted it like a giant stained glass mural and it became the focal point at Mirror Mirror.

“One night, Tracy and I after hours were sitting there looking at the heart, and we’d already been suiting people up for weddings, and she’d been doing custom gowns and we were looking at the heart, and we were like, “Why don’t we just do weddings too?” Marco said. “We opened the Electric Chapel maybe a year ago. We’ve done over 20 weddings so far. We had a big presence at Nashville Pride Festival this year. We did a pop-up wedding experience there. Nashville meets Vegas without jumping on the plane.”

“It’s not just a venue, it’s not just a community center, it’s not just a wedding chapel, it’s all of these different things combined, which really gives us freedom to do the creative components of what we’ve been building,” Tracy said. “We’ve had so many artists do their first shows in a comfortable environment. We’re just interested in how we can curate a space that serves the community in so many different ways.”

As Mirror Mirror Network begin the next chapter in their journey, Tracy says a big component they want add to their business is having a space for classes and workshops and keeping hands-on creative energy in Nashville alive. A space for bigger gatherings, shows and weddings, but having a space where the community can come in, learn new skills and meet new people.

”It was too much for us to try to keep investing in a space that we didn’t own,” she said. “We had to make that decision to close what we’re doing. But it feels somewhat of an empowered decision because we know the next step is going to be bigger and better. We did the hard work of actually getting our hands dirty and building this business in the open and letting it become what the community wanted it to become.”
