Title tracks: The song remains the same (as the album)

This was another fun one! The January 12 #ThematicStatic included all title tracks, meaning the song on the record that shares its name. Self-explanatory but quite delicious, this show can be streamed at anytime here (👇🏼) and you can hear new #ThematicStatic shows every Thursday at 9am CT with an 8am encore broadcast the following Saturday.

#ThematicStatic Playlist – 1/12/22

The War on Drugs –I Don’t Live Here Anymore” – Hey, Danny — an early WNXP listener who provided one of my first “IRL” host-listener meeting geek-outs in early 2021 — I thank you for this request. Lucius on backing vox made this intro to the forthcoming WoD album very exciting and hopeful six weeks before its release in October 2021. ICYMI, I Don’t Live Here Anymore was a former #RecordoftheWeek.

The Eurythmics “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)” – My mom told me this record turned 40 at the beginning of 2023. It sounds absolutely timeless to me.

The New Pornographers – “Brill Bruisers” – Evan asked for this during the previous week’s #ThematicStatic, and I honored it now, as it fits both b(r)ills: a title track and a track 1. The New Pornos are back with a new release on Merge in March called Continue As a Guest. Here they are singing “Brill Bruisers” on Letterman (remember him?!):

Sly & The Family Stone – “Dance to the Music” – Paige asked for this 1968 classic.

The Beths – “Future Me Hates Me” – Jon all the way in Hawai’i asked for this title track from The Beths’ 2018 record. They’re back here at Brooklyn Bowl soon and (for a while) you can enter win tix here.

…And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead – “Source Tags & Codes” – “Stoner” rock from the earliest aughts put this Austin band on the map — the college radio map, at least. Thanks for reviving this one, Nick. (P.S. I also loved Worlds Apart.)

The Cocteau Twins – “Heaven or Las Vegas” – Great request, Johan!

Ari Lennox ft. J. Cole – “Shea Butter Baby” – 2019 record from Lennox included this title track and you might see/hear her sing it on March 2 at Marathon Music Works. It was also on the Creed II original motion picture soundtrack:

Ty Segall – “Manipulator – Dope.

Neutral Milk Hotel – “In An Aeroplane Over The Sea” – NMH’s career retrospective vinyl box set is now available for pre-order on the Merge Records site. It will be released in late February. As it turns out, my birthday is in May.

Radiohead – “The Bends” – Jude seconded this pick!

Lilly Hiatt – “Trinity Lane” – Caleb leveled up with some local music about a local thoroughfare – “this is livin’ off of Trinity Lane” – from Hiatt’s 2017 record of the same name.

Jimmy Eat World – “Futures” – Mike threatened us with a good, nostalgic time, which was all the hope of October 2004 and the release of this Jimmy Eat World record.
