There are few bands who perfectly fit the Daptone Records roster like Thee Sacred Souls. Embracing the grit of ’70s R&B and the sweetness of ’60s soul, the San Diego trio’s self-titled debut feels timeless yet modern. While the soul and R&B influences might be obvious, the band notes inspiration from Chicano rock bands and even Italian library music. Because of this, labeling the band strictly as “retro soul” feels limited. Frontman Josh Lane’s stunning falsetto lies gently on top of the groovy tempo of Sal Samano and Alex Garcia’s rhythm section, creating a sound that is effortlessly laid-back and distinct.
Watch Thee Sacred Souls perform “Love Is The Way” and “Easier Said Than Done” live at WNXP’s Sonic Cathedral.
