The Royal Treatment on National Princess Day

Another dumb, made-up holiday, presents another opportunity for a sweet mix we compile together for airplay on WNXP! No matter your thoughts on the British monarchy, I think you’ll appreciate the show. Listen to the November 18 #ThematicStatic and find additional requests below.

#ThematicStatic Playlist

XTC – “King for a Day” – An old classic requested by Dale!
King Tuff – “Neverending Sunshine” – In hindsight, this was for Emily.
Daisha McBride – “Black Queen” – This track dropped last year, but Middle Tennessee’s own “Rap Girl” releases her debut full-length album Let Me Get This Off My Chest TODAY, goodness gracious, we ready!

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard – “Catching Smoke” – How much of my money will the Giz get in 2022, when they tour the globe?
Christine and The Queens – “I Disappear Into Your Arms” – Long live pop music. Oui oui.
Anderson .Paak – “King James” – Zach reminded me of this anthem from 1/2 of Silk Sonic, who you might remember as a successful solo artist before the duo eclipsed the sun in 2021.
Queens of the Stone Age – “Little Sister” – That riff, though.

Stevie Wonder – “Sir Duke” – Stevie, we stan. Forever.
Lorde – “Royals” – Elle made this request via Slack from the biz end of Nashville Public Radio.
King Princess – “There She Goes Again” – Get yourself a solid Velvet Underground cover that lives on the I’ll Be Your Mirror compilation released this year.

Kings of Convenience – “I Don’t Know What I Can Save You From” – How is something so soft also so powerful? That’s long been the brand for this Norwegian duo, which actually released a new album, Peace or Love, this year.
Bonnie Prince Billy & Bill Callahan – “The Wild Kindness” – This Silver Jews cover, also featuring Cassie Berman, shines light on the incredible songwriting of the late David Berman.

More Respect for the Crown

Spin Doctors – “Two Princes” – Also an internal to Nashville Public Radio request, this one’s for Lisa! (I still own and sometimes play this compact disc, by the way.)
Prince Paul – Jody still loves the whole A Prince Among Thieves record on the hip hop label Tommy Boy.
Soul Coughing – “Idiot Kings” – Continuing the ’90s love, this one was requested by J. Francis on IG.
Quay Dash – “Queen of This Shit” – Arthur requested this glitchy empowerment song I’d honestly never heard, but which appears on the soundtrack for the HBO series Euphoria.
Mogwai – “My Father, My King” – This post-rock epic is not radio-friendly, I’m afraid. Unless you’re a freeform college DJ, then you play it when you go downstairs three floors mid-show to smoke cigs (or so I hear). Nick requested it and I promised I’d embed. Listen and go take on the world!
