St. Paul & The Broken Bones’ fourth studio album The Alien Coast is the band’s most ambitious work yet. The 11-song collection, described by frontman Paul Janeway as a “fever dream in sonic form” combines elements of soul and funk (to be expected from the 8-piece Birmingham band) with psychedelia and even stoner metal. This new experimentation showcases the band’s ability to create more than a snappy neo-soul record. The complexity in sound and instrumentation combined with gloom and doom storytelling take the listener on a compelling and reflective journey, perhaps even an acid trip…or fever dream, if you will.
