On The Record: Say She She

Brooklyn-based disco funk trio Say She She takes the classical training of Piya Malik, Sabrina Cunningham and Nya Brown and passes it through a filter of eclectic, synth-y elegance. Drawing on an energy reminiscent of Chic and Cortex, with a triumphant twist, their newest album Cut and Rewind embodies a sound taken from the past, overlaid with a vision for the future. The disco glitz and effortless charm of this record do not act as a veneer over its message. Rather, they serve as proof that protest and joy deserve to share space both on- and off-stage.

On the Record with WNXP after the group’s performance in our Sonic Cathedral, Sabrina and Piya invite listeners and show-goers to join in a moment of shared release at their concerts. The co-founders of the group tell the story behind the Say She She mission to “preserve spaces of joy” — to harness community power and political resistance through the harmony of movement, spirit and sound.
