New Music Experience: June 18, 2021

Listen to the show.

Today we get back to normal-ish. For the first time since the show began late last year, we have in-person special guests. Morning host Celia, evening host Marquis Munson and weekend host Adam Culver all share their insights on their favorite new music picks and we feature a couple of remote selections by WNXP staff members Jewly Hight and Emily Young.

We have the first original song from Nashville’s own Soccer Mommy since last year’s widely acclaimed Color Theory. There’s also an international collaboration 12 years in the making, a timely project that matches the classic spirit of musical protest with the voices of a new generation and a cover by one of Nashville’s great song interpreters. All that and another new one from the ridiculous prolific King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard.

While we are adjusting to the new normal, we are changing up the normal NME order by starting off with a name you might already know. We have been featuring deep under the radar picks at the top and while this artist isn’t exactly a household name, he’s racked up an enormous pile of press as he seeks to redefine rock and roll expectations. As Flood Magazine says “Anyone who says rock is dead clearly hasn’t heard of Yves Tumor an experimental, ominous rock icon for the times.”

  1. Yves Tumor – Jackie
  2. Efterklang – Living Other Lives
  3. Kings of Convenience feat. Feist – Catholic Country
  4. Marquis Munson picks – H.E.R. feat. Thundercat – Bloody Waters
  5. Soccer Mommy – Kissing In the Rain
  6. Jewly Hight picks – Southern Avenue – Push Now
  7. Emily Young picks – Shannon and the Clams – Year of the Spider
  8. The Go! Team – A Bee Without Its Sting
  9. Adam Culver picks – Gang of Youths – Angel of 8th Avenue
  10. Dylan LeBlanc – Expecting to Fly
  11. Celia picks – Torres – Hug from a Dinosaur
  12. Leif Vollebekk – Long Blue Light
  13. King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard – Catching Smoke
