While Marquis Munson was on Kanye watch for the album that never came, The New Music Experience— supported by Tennessee Brew Works — still managed to find new music that actually made its way out into the world. Prince and Big Red Machine are among the headliners. Morning host Celia interviews WNXP Record of the Week artist Lucy Dacus, Jewly Hight digs into the trends connecting Christone “Kingfish” Ingram and Leon Bridges and we feature a couple of rising stars from Nashville’s multi-faceted music scene Bren Joy and Samia.
There’s also one of the best covers you’ll hear all year. Monica Martin (Phox) takes on the Wilco classic “Jesus, Etc.” as part of the “stories” series from the guys behind the Scary Pockets funk covers project.
We start with the song that answers the question “How do you follow a viral sensation?” (No, we’re not talking about Lil Nas X). The Linda Lindas are an all-female punk band from LA whose members range from 10 to 16 and whose live recording at a library of the song “Racist Sexist Boy” went viral earlier this year. They were endorsed by the likes of Nashville’s own Hayley Williams, signed to legendary punk label Epitaph and have now released their follow up single. It’s a little more polished but still retains that amazing energy and has a chorus that’s sure to be a fist pumping anthem when they are allowed to go on tour.
