Mountain songs

This time of year (despite a recent Middle Tennessee run of 80-degree days) always makes me think of mountain drives, mountain hikes, camping and other oudoorsy stuff that’s best suited for fall. Maybe we have mountain lust in these rolling hills, so why not make a playlist with it?

Stream this show ( ) and pretend to breathe in some mountain air for an hour, packed with great requests. Leave YOUR request for future themed sets on the socials @WNXPNashville, or by recording your own voice at wnxp.org/feedback and/or dialing 615-320-9100!

#ThematicStatic Playlist – 11/2/23

John Denver “Rocky Mountain High” Emily, our friends at Black Abbey Brewing and one self-professed mensch took to the internet to ask for this classic love letter to Colorado’s great range.

Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell – “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” Joseph and Abby requested this song that also appeared on our Best Duets show last year!

Miley Cyrus “The Climb” – Whether or not you, too, are an early aughts pop girlie/”Hannah Montana” stan, Anne is right: this tune is inspirational!

Jane’s Addiction – Mountain Song” Stephanie, Laura, Carrie and Christian all asserted that this had to make the playlist.

Laura Veirs – “Mountains of the Moon” A pretty Grateful Dead cover into a studio Dead original? Don’t threaten me with a good time, friend from Fairview.

Grateful Dead – “Fire on the Mountain” – Amanda, thanks for twisting my arm!

Dolly Parton – “My Tennessee Mountain Home” – State pride summoned by Will!

Foals “Mountain at My Gates” – David and Stephanie both mentioned this one.

Fleet Foxes – “Blue Ridge Mountains” Holden and Paige created the opportunity for another Tennessee mention in a mountain song.

My brother, where do you intend to go tonight?
I heard that you missed your connecting flight
To the Blue Ridge Mountains, over near Tennessee

“Blue Ridge Mountains”

Led Zeppelin – “Misty Mountain Hop” – Hear Robert Plant back on his “Lord of the Rings” bullshit, but also wailing about partying. We can have all the nice things! Mark and Jaime both requested this 1971 song.

Arcade Fire – “Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains)” – Let Regine sing! Our very own Jude Mason had the intro here.

Halfnoise “Mountain” WNXP’s newest staffer Carly Butler, and also Janine, revived this local band’s track from 2014. The new Halfnoise record is out on 11/17!
