Kings of Leon’s Jared Followill shares a very personal, and deeply cool playlist

Multi-platinum Nashville rockers Kings of Leon have shown off a variety of influences in their two decades as a band but it’s fascinating to dig even deeper with an individual member to see what foundation they bring to the musical table. And who better to share a foundation, than a bass player? For his playlist, Kings’ bassist Jared Followill brought us obscure indie rock, ethereal classics, emotive singer songwriters and, of course, all time bass melodies.

The Go Betweens “Cattle and Cane”
This is a super nostalgic song for me. I discovered when I was about 13. It kind of shaped a period of my life in a new town, at a new school, etc.. in early adolescence.

New Order “Age Of Consent”
They are a huge influence on me. Especially Peter Hook. Melody is driven by the bass on most of their songs.

Built To Spill “Else”
Another big band for me in high school. So fresh and different than most of the stuff I had heard at that time.

TR/ST “Candy Walls”
Huge song for me about 10-15 years ago. Big influence. One of the best outros of a song I’ve ever heard.

Broncho “Two Step”
Arguably my favorite band on the planet. The opening lyrics are basically my motto with my wife who is taller than me.

Homer, Hether “Deep Sea”
Beautiful and chill. One of my favorites from this year.

This Mortal Coil “Kangaroo”
One of the few covers that I prefer over the original. Such a beautiful, haunting song. Incredible.

Duster “Stars Will Fall”
Saw this one on an instagram reel. Probably a tik tok recycled on insta. It’s so gut punching. So pretty. Puts me in a good bad place.

Wild Nothing “Chinatown”
Love this song. Been on them (him) since the beginning. He does it right.

Dream Love “We Got A Tan”
Had to add this, because it has two basses. Which is basically all you need. It rules!

Damien Jurado “A.M. A.M.”
This is just a big song for my family. I used to sing it to my daughter when she was a baby. Now we sing it together.

Black Marble “Iron Lung”
Beautiful throwback style song. Great vibes for fall. I like 80’s alternative a lot, so anything that takes from that era will win me over.

Magnetic Fields “Papa Was A Rodeo”
Big influence for us as a band lyrically. Just a beautiful story. Top 25 song for me.

The Cure “One More Time”
This song just slays me. Makes me so happy and sad. The Cure are just the very best.

Grizzly Bear “Two Weeks”
Just an all time great song. Insane melodies. Drums. Piano. Big one for me.
