An Indigenous Present is an exhibition at the Frist Art Museum spanning 100 years of modern and contemporary indigenous art, and featuring 15 artists who use abstraction to represent personal and collective narratives.
The gallery will close on Sunday, September 27 with events highlighting the exhibit throughout the month starting tomorrow, September 3, with Frist Films: Reframing the Narrative – Indigenous Filmmakers in Focus.
”Collaborating with our community is a huge part of what my team in education and public programs does,” said Miller Dew, assistant educator for adult programs at the Frist Art Museum. “Indige-Nash, in particular, have been huge partners with us throughout programming for this exhibition. We are having a short film panel with two artists from Indige-Nash and our guest filmmaker will be Andrés Pérez Duarte. He’ll be showing his short film, ‘Galiana Number Eight.’ But we’re especially excited to highlight him because he actually has a new short film coming out this year at the Nashville Film Festival.”
She continues: “Some other programs coming up that we’re super excited about include on September 10th, Raven Chacon, who is a featured artist in Indigenous Present, will be presenting the talk ‘What Gets Amplified.’ He’s a multimedia artist and composer, and he’s gonna be talking about some of his contemporary work, as well as past works featuring field recordings. Also, on Thursday, September 17th, we’re having Native American chocolatier Sophia Ray presenting a hands-on, I should say a taste-on workshop about Native American drinking chocolate tradition.”
Starting tonight (Sep 2) WNXP Presents Esperanza Spalding at City Winery and tomorrow night Meltt takes the stage at The Blue Room. Also on Thursday night at the East Room are Nashville artists WHOISJORDAN and Amber Ais and Muddy Roots Music Festival takes place in Cookeville featuring Shannon and the Clams and Frankie and the Witch Fingers. Another local show happening Friday (Sep 4) at Garage Sale Bar with former WNXP Nashville Artist of the Month Jarren Blair and also on Friday and Saturday (Sep 5) Ray LaMontagne with The Weather Station is at the Ryman. Wrap up this week’s listings on Monday (Sep 7) with Cheekface performing at The End and on Tuesday (Sep 8) Kehlani with special guests Durand Bernarr and Isaia Huron is at Municipal Auditorium.
